REDDING, Calif.—Simpson University’s Veterans Success Center invites the North State community to join in special Veterans Awareness Week activities on campus.
A Military Appreciation Tailgate Party will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, prior to a women’s basketball game in the James M. Grant Student Life Center. The Red Hawks men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, will feature Military Appreciation Night, with a special halftime salute and free game entry to all veterans.
A Veterans Day Celebration service from 10:20 to 11:20 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, will feature Simpson alumnus and Army Chaplain 1st Lt. Chris Peterson as guest speaker, along with the Semper Fi II Honor Detail and Jefferson Pipe Band. Representatives from the U.S. Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and National Guard will attend, as well as members of the Nor-Cal Veterans Historical Association and the Veterans K9 Connections.
The service will be followed by a complimentary lunch for veterans in the university dining center at 11:20.
Simpson University’s Veterans Success Center celebrated its grand opening Nov. 17, 2016. Serving 50 student veterans this fall, the center is designed as a central place for veterans and their dependents to access educational and career-planning resources. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology equipment, the center houses a VA work-study site, the Student Veteran Organization, Simpson’s chapter of the SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society, academic resources, conference and study services, as well as a community space.
In September, the university held an unveiling ceremony for a new Veterans Memorial Garden on campus. The garden, which is open to the public, was the Class of 2018’s gift to the university.
In addition, Simpson University will participate in the Shasta Lake Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 10. Justin Spears, director of the Veterans Success Center and a Navy veteran, will speak Nov. 9 at Veterans Day assemblies at Turtle Bay Elementary School with Simpson student and Marine Corps veteran Scotty Janson.
